I like this book and illustrations, because it is very interesting about the mammoths. It was cool how tall and big mammoths are. They had very shaggy hair. Andy was scared of the dark until his grandpa Tobuck took him to check traps and had to spend the night out in the dark. Andy was afriad to sleep in the dark. So when he was sleeping he remembered about the story Tobuck told him. When he fell asleep he dreamed about trees chasing him and bumped into a mammoth. Then his grandpa woke up, and conquered being afraid of the dark.

Phillip at Ashley River EL
Mammoth Magic was a very good book because it told the true stories of what Indians would do to kill Mammoths. It also told us that mammoths are extinct animals. It told us about a young boy who was afraid of the dark. He went with his grandfather to check the animal traps. While Andy is out with his grandfather, Toebuck, he dreams he sees a mammoth and rides on his back. The illustrations in that book where very well done. The writing was excellent and all my friends and I loved the story. When the boy wakes up in the morning he is not afraid of the dark and he goes into the shadows which use to scare him and he gets firewood to cook breakfast. I exspeacily liked the story when he was riding on the mammoths back and when he was following the wolves on the mammoths back. My favorite picture in the book was when the mammoth picked him up. Well that is what I liked the most about the book and I would tell you more but I am out of time. Wait before you go I want to tell you my favorite part of the book. It was when he got picked up by the mammoth.

Brianne@ Ashley River El
The book I read was Mammoth Magic. I liked several things about this book. One thing I liked about the book is it's illustrations. The reason I said this is because the illustrations really bring things out. Another thing I liked is the words. She really uses variety. My favorite part is when Toby faced up to being scared of the dark.

The reason I gave Shelley Gill 5 stars is because she makes her books so interesting and she makes you want to read more of her books. From reading that one book she makes me want to read many others.

Miracles for Marlee

Author: Shannon G. Turner
Average review score:

Great story of the struggle to adopt a 3 yr old from China
This is a terrific story of a young mother's struggles to adopt a 3 year old from China after a nightmare of medical problems prevented her from having another child. Her determination to raise the necessary funds while also being a full time working wife and mom is inspiring. Having finally raised the money and waited the long year, Shannon's turn to travel to China to meet her new daughter Marlee arrives. Marlee turns out to be a very smart, funny little girl whose biggest concern in her life is the welfare of her best friend Chloe who is also 3 and is being adopted by another family at the same time. The love shown between these little girls will make you laugh and cry. This is a great book and should be read by everyone.

Amazing adoption story!
I bought Shannon Turner's book, "Miracles for Marlee" and finished it in two days! I loved it! I was amazed at all of the trials that her family endured, and particularly those that Shannon herself endured, as they struggled to add a daughter to their family. Ms. Turner did an excellent job of pulling the reader into her experiences. She dealt with emotions ranging from utter despare to total elation, and I felt every one of them as I read the book!

I am also the parent of a beautiful daughter adopted from China, so much of the book brought back wonderful memories of our own experiences in bringing our child home. Many people ask me about what's involved with adopting internationally, and I will be sure to refer them to this book. You don't just jump on a plane and pick up a baby; it's a long, arduous, expensive process that ultimately ends in a miracle.

Kudos to Ms. Turner for telling her amazing story so eloquently!

Like peeking into a private diary...
As a mother of a toddler, I have very little "extra" reading time. This book sat on my nightstand until I found an evening to dive into it. I was amazed at how quick a read it was for the thickness of the book. In just two evenings of reading I shared this author's heartache of infertility and her inspiring determination to have another child. I was awed at how she overcomes a multitude of obstacles in an effort to adopt. With a sense of being a traveling companion along on the journey to China, readers share Shannon and Marlee's intimate first days as mother and daughter. Anyone with a heart for children will laugh and cry at the interaction between Marlee and her best friend Chloe as they cling to the familiar in the face of the unknown. The emotional highs and lows kept me turning pages. I feel as though I have traveled across the world and back on this adoption adventure with the Turners. Like a personal journal that comes to a last entry on the last page, this book leaves the reader wanting to know "what happens tomorrow?..."

You CAN Retire Young: How to Retire in Your 40s or 50s Without Being Rich
Published in Paperback by American Book Publishing (October, 2002)
Authors: Larry A. Ferstenou, Joe Nendza, and Shannon Murdock
Average review score:

A must read for anyone EVER considering retiring!
When I first started reading "You can retire young" I was confused why anyone would actually consider leaving the workforce early. I have always felt that our job in life is to give everything we could give until we could no longer
move. Throughout this book Larry Ferstenou has allowed me a completely different perspective on life. He has actually retired young and, more importantly, has not quit living! If anything his pace has quickened. The author's writing style is one that instills confidence that anyone can do this. He teaches you three simple rules that anyone can easily follow to build a net worth sufficient to retire. He also goes into great detail about the questions you should ask yourself before you consider retiring. With so many books out there only portraying one side of the issue it was refreshing to find one that really looks at your options from every angle. This book is well researched, well written, and down to earth. I would recommed this book not only to anyone considering retiring young but also to anyone who would like to retire at ANY point in their future!

Great BOOK - Great INTERVIEW
This is probably one of the best books on the subject, in part because Larry (and his wife Kris) share exactly how they did it. Retiring young isn't going to be possible for everyone, but with this book your chances go up 1000% . One of the best things about this book is how they show you that you don't have to be "rich" you just need enough. It takes the stress and fear of failure out of making it happen.

This book is the proactive approach to managing your life style, your savings, and your investments. Don't trust Social Security or employer pension funds. Get this book and take charge of when and how you retire.

I interviewed Larry Ferstenou on "The Inside Success Show" and loved every minute of it. I believe in what he's teaching because I retired at 40 and I'm now living the dream life. Read his book and find out how you can too.
Here's some of what you'll learn from the book:
** How Larry and Kris were able to retire at ages 42 and 40 respectively
** Why you should not rely on Social Security of pension plans
** What 3 simple keys will bring you financial independence quickly
** How you can save faster than you ever thought possible.
** Why you should learn how to pick your own investments
** How to prepare for retirement even during hard times
** And much, much more ..

Read this Book when You're Only 21!
Larry F. has written an easy-to-read book that answers any questions you have (and some you didn't know you had) about how to retire when you're still young enough to enjoy it. Each chapter has many ideas on how to achieve your goal of enjoying your life for many years after you retire young. The book helps plan out a workable income for retirement years, and is so easy to do! The plan does require some diligence and curtailment of impulsivity, but the end result is well worth it. Because of Larry's book, I think I really will be able to retire in 6 years, instead of the 12 years I thought would be remaining in my work life. Thanks again for an interesting, well-thought out book.

I like Alaska's Three Bears because I learned a lot of stuff in the book. I had no idea only three bears lived in Alaska. If I could be one of the bears I would be the Small black bear just lying in a tree in the jungle. That sounds like my kind of life.

Behind Closed Doors
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (October, 2003)
Author: Shannon McKenna
Average review score:

Murder Mystery & Highly Sensual - Vulnerable Leads
Behind Closed Doors is very much a non-typical romance novel! The author dedicates almost as much time to the mystery as she does the development of the leads' relationship. There are highly charged sensual scenes that come close to overshadowing the underlying romance. Yet, if we watch closely, we see both the hero and heroine as highly vulnerable. The book encompasses a great deal of maturing for both leads - especially the hero.

Raine Cameron is looking for her father's killer. She has taken a job with her uncle's company to hopefully find his killer. Seth Mackey is looking for this brother's murderer. He is a surveillance expert and is watching Raine's uncle's company because he believes he will discover the murderer within the company. Thus, we find Seth, on the opening page of the book, spying on Raine and finding himself closed to obsessed with her.

The leads meet early in the book. Seth and Raine are good at keeping secrets from the other. But as their relationship develops they each open gradually and expose the despised vulnerability that lies deep within the other. Seth was a little too mean to warrant Raine's love. Initially, Raine allows herself to be pushed around but gradually we see her becoming more assertive. Nevertheless, there are still times you may roll your eyes and wonder "Why is she allowing this?" The hero certainly takes his time in becoming a nicer person but it is his ruthlessness that carries many of the sensual scenes. These sensual scenes rate about a 4.5 out of 5 (see More About Me for rating guidelines).

If I had a choice, I would rate this book 4.5 stars instead of 5. My reasoning is based entirely on the time dedicated to the growth of Seth and Raine's romantic relationship. Although the murder mystery was somewhat better than you find in most romance novels, it still took too many pages. The couple's relationship had a good base and capacity for growth that is never amply explored.

Overall, certain scenes within the book are too powerful to warrant less than a five star rating. It is certainly one of the spicier books I have read and you definitely have to be a reader that appreciates a type A, dominant male lead. The heroine does knock him off his all-powerful pedestal more than once but he always climbs back up on it. On the whole, this is a fun, entertaining read that I will keep to read again. This author is new and I expect many good books from her in the future. She somehow has developed an intriguing edge in Behind Closed Doors that is difficult to define, but captivating none the less.

A Perfect Mix!
This book was the perfect mix of mystery and romance - which is usually a hard combination to get right. Many times authors try too hard to make a mystery plot twist and turn, but this one was great - it kepy your interest without being overworked. There was great character development of all characters individually and also good development of relationships and interactions. The romance between Raine and Seth was also well done - sometimes in a mystery the development of feelings is minimized, but not in this case. Lots and lots of hot, sizzling scenes!! OK, so that's an understatement.
Some might think the language in the book is a bit crude, but I find it realistic. How accurate is it when a tough guy says "Gosh darn it, what in the heck are you doing?" Nah-uh, it's not!
It's been a long time since I've considered a book to be 5 stars, especially for a romantic suspense/mysters. So BRAVO to McKenna for her amazing and perfect debut! I am definitely a fan. I wonder if we will see future books about the McCloud boys?? Either way, I can't wait to get more from McKenna.

Suspense and Romance Behind Closed Doors
I first read Shannon McKenna when she wrote a novella for the anthology ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT. I was thrilled to learn she was going to have a full-length book and it was going to be in the Brava line. Brava is a new line of books that promise the reader erotic romance stories and currently not only has Shannon McKenna signed up, but others like Lori Foster.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS opens with the hero, Seth Mackey, spying on the heroine, Raine Cameron. He is after the killer of his brother and spying on Raine is one way he believes he is going to achieve this. Unfortunately to his job at hand, he grows attracted to her while watching her and it somewhat gets in his way. It does not take them long to meet and the sparks just electrify between the two. And not much longer for Seth and Raine to get in bed and begin a rather interesting, intense love affair. He doesn't trust her and Raine is secretive to him. But boy, he doesn't let his niggling distrust to stop him from pursuing her into bed.
Raine has a secret agenda of her own. She wants to learn about her father's death and the only way she can is to go undercover in her uncle's business. Seth is hired to do security for her uncle, and when she meets Seth, she is caught between the attraction she feels for him and finishing up her task. Even almost to the end, Seth is not sure if he can trust Raine, but love wins his heart. A man who thought he could not love finds that he can.

The relationship between the hero and heroine is very intense, sometimes like a love hate relationship. But they agree in bed very well. ;) Seth is very much a macho man and an Alpha Hero similar to that of the best selling author Linda Howard's male heroes. No woman can stand a chance, but then, who can resist one as sensual and tough as Seth Mackey. He is very sexual and there is lots of action in bed, but also out. It is not a gory type book, but it fits the bill as a romantic suspense for me, with much emphasis on the romance part. Just to warn you though: there is several uses of the f work and other sexual slang terms in the book. It did not bother me, but some readers may not like the use of the words. To me, the usage was necessary and realistically moved the story along.

The story flies to a fast and explosive ending that left me satisfied with the end, but wishing the story had not ended. It was that good to me. Ms McKenna created some characters that not only were realistic, but with great sexual tension that throbbed within the pages of the book. I wish I could give it more than five stars, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book by Shannon McKenna. If you enjoy a good contemporary romance/supsense story that is very hot and sensual, then you will enjoy BEHIND CLOSED DOORS by Shannon McKenna.

Me Nobody Knew: A Story of Triumph for All Girls
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (March, 2001)
Author: Shannon McLinden
Average review score:

A Great And Inspirational Book For Girls Everywhere.
I picked up this book, because I saw it had something to do with an eating disorder. While suffering with anorexia and bulimia, I decided to read the book out of interest. Actually, the book was not just about an eating disorder. It was so much more than that! The author writes about her life, starting from her early teen years, to where she is now. She lived through years of depression, alcohol, and more. The writing is excellent. I could relate to what she wrote so much, it felt like she was me. She wrote about how her relationship with her parents changed drasticaly, and how she would go out with just about any guy just to remain 'popular'. The book has different sub titles, and its great. Towards the end of the book, after she is raped, Shannon decides to change her life around and love her self, her family, and life a lot more. She really inspired me, she says that no one should have to live up to anything anyone else tells them to. That there is no 'perfect body', and there is a partner out there for everyone. She has triggered me to try my best at recovery, and find my true self, as corny or cliche as it sounds. I highly reccomend this powerful novel!

HELPED
This book was an amazing help to me. I feel like it related to every girl no matter where they are in life. I was going to through a simlular situation, and this made me realize I wasn't alone. I couldn't put the book down because it was so amazing, I read the entire thing in one day at school. Every girl in the world should have a copy of this womans book.

Real and Wonderful
I just bought this book today and I'm so glad I did. As soon as I had gotten through the first chapter I was thinking how much I could relate even if it wasn't with the big things. It's nice to read a story about a girl that's been through so much and has chosen to share with us how she made it. It helps to put a lot of things into persepective and can really open your eyes. I recommend this book to everyone.

Present Moment Awareness
Published in Hardcover by Present Moment, Inc. (15 October, 2001)
Author: Shannon Duncan
Average review score:

Awareness of How
This book really delivered on its promise of how to improve my life and existence by being present in the moment. The only fault I have with it is that the wrting style was a bit dry and impersonal. I've been very positively influenced by books I've found here recently which not only educate and lead the reader to enhanced modes of living, but are also very entertaining to read at the same time. For example, Clint Arthur's instructional memoire "9 Free Secrets of New Sensual Power," which I wholeheartedly advise everyone to investigate if they really want an enjoyable read that not only entertains but also Educates on a very personal and essential level! There's also a memoire by a woman called "Wisdom Daddy Taught Me" which serves up a very healthy plateful of knowledge and material to improve the reader's life in addition to being extremely fun to read. All of these books are very highly recommended, but if you want the best of them all, get the one by Clint because it will empower you and thrill you at the same time.

Easy Read
Consider Present Moment Awareness a primer on the subject of living in the
moment. Shannon Duncan explains his view of being present and how to live
an aware life. If you've never been exposed to something like this before,
this book can be an enlightening introduction. The book is easy to
understand and has quite a few exercises designed to actively teach you how
to be present right now. I found that it offered a unique perspective on
life that I haven't found in many "self-help" books at all.

To further your appetite for well-being, I also recommentd my absolute
favorite book on the subject of awareness and living in the present:
"Working on Yourself Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane. This book is
filled with an amazing perspective on how to see life in acompletely new way. After reading it, I felt lighter, more in tune with my
life and more enthusiastic about everything I did. The authors do a
wonderful job of speaking in easily understandable language about a subject
they obviously know well and in a way that hit home with me. I strongly
recommend getting their book in addition to Duncan's if you are interested
in discovering a way to live life that is fun and satisfying.

Peace in the Midst of Chaos
For all of us who've ever felt we were being pulled nine different directions simultaneously like a many-headed hydra, there are times when we feel that we just can't go on any further. If we encounter just one more interruption, distraction, or frustration -- we'll snap. Sometimes after we've snapped, we later wish we had somehow managed to hold ourselves together just a little bit better.

If the above feeling is all-too-familiar to you, you are in for a big treat when you read Shannon Duncan's book, PRESENT MOMENT AWARENESS. Designed to be a guide to developing awareness of living in this moment of "now", PRESENT MOMENT AWARENESS is straightforward enough for anyone to quickly begin to master some powerful meditative tools. Written simply enough for any beginner to understand, yet packed with enough truth to resonate even for life-long meditators, this book truly has something for everyone.

I felt tremendously soothed as I read this book and did the exercises in it. PRESENT MOMENT AWARENESS offers the reader a very special and visceral sense of peace as one remembers simple things, like how to be gentle with oneself -- even in the midst of chaos. This is a very healing book for anyone who is undergoing stressful changes, and everyone who encounters stress in their daily lives.

I like the book Danger the Dog Yard Cat. I recommend this book to you because it tells you about a cat that raced in the Iditarod. The pictures are funny. This book is half true and half make believe. This book is about a cat that gets saved by a dog sled racer that has a lot of dogs. The Cat has to race for the dog leader because he hurt his paw. Danger had one friend that was a dog, and his name was Mud shark.

Aubrey at Ashley River El.
Danger is a cat that got adopted at a dog pound. The lady who adopted him ran a Iditarod. Danger didn't like the dogs very much, but he had a buddie called Mud Shark. When the leader of the Iditarod got hurt, there was not another dog that could take his place, so Danger had to be the leader that time. The iditarod race ended up as a dream. I like this book because it is funny.

Danger is a cat that got adopted from a dog pound. The lady who adopted Danger happened to have 39 husky dogs. But one cross eyed dog Mudshark was Danger's friend. One day on the Iditarod the lead dog was hurt.So the lady lost hope. But then the lady had an idea Danger was then hooked to the front and was leading the team. At the end of the race Danger's team had won.At the end he was just dreaming. I think this was a very funny story and I think you'll enjoy this book.
